Collective Statements--English Translation:

Describe the learning environment that you don’t want in the high school:

I don’t want to see in the new high school a teacher who does not understand the struggles of an ESL student. I want more consideration and support from these teachers, more cultural sensitivity courses, no racism, no negligence towards ESL students. I don’t want to see such emphasis on the scientific aspect of education over the artistic one. I don’t want to see my student having to access to rigorous and advanced language. I don’t want to see lack of security and protection against drugs. I don’t want to see divisions based on racism, social and geographic discrimination, inequity in receiving educational and social resources as well as access to qualified teachers who can impart quality teaching. I don’t want to see socioeconomic divisions. I say no to gangs, no to a mediocre system of evaluation and no to inappropriate teaching and learning.  I don’t want to be looked down or see racism addressed to Latinos.

Describe the learning environment that you would like to see in the high school:

I want see greater support in sport for our youth. Fast and easy access to information and greater parental participation in school. A newsletter in Spanish for parents that are fluent in English so they are aware of important topics. More grants to support for emigrants. I want to see more harmony, integration, and students not held back because of ESL. I would like after school ESL workshops, greater emphasis on language, global history and culture, more Hispanic teachers or at least proportional representation and would love see second language taught in elementary.  More cultural relevance for cultures outside of Alaskan cultures. I would like to see more educational opportunities and equity in participation for learning. Assistance and support to guide and motivate students to continue studying. I want to see that students’ opinions and suggestions are heard and that they have access to what will bring more opportunities to our children. I would like to see teachers open minded and renewed in their understanding of students’ learning styles. I want to see staff talking and ready to deal with situation related to drugs and other teenage problems. Motivating staff, enthusiastic counselors to keep students focused and motivated to continue with education. A class, any content, in Spanish so that our students can take a mental break from the pressure of learning in English. I want to see equity in access learning programs. I want see more funding to support ESL students, more recognition of their presence in newsletters and in the school. More opportunities without preference for race and culture starting in elementary or primary.

I want to see an assessment system that supports learning for the students who have difficulties because of ESL. More rigor and less competition explaining to students how it works and the reasons behind the assessment. I want to see greater cooperation and participation of the minority community, with representative voice. And programs of early detection for at risk students. I want to see alternatives to continue with GED, and vocational programs.
I want to see a system of orientation for families of ESL students to be informed of different resources available and programs of cultural connection for emigrants. I want to see a second language taught in elementary school and not wait until high school.

Describe a student when he/she has graduated.

Students have knowledge to continue their studies in the university. They are ready and prepared like other students. Ready to use English at the same level, ready to work in any area. A student looking forward to university studies with Great writing skills, good oral communication, appropriate & advanced internet search skills, open minded, non-judgement al, advanced library information seeking skills, critical thinking. A self-confident student who will succeed outside of Juneau and find open doors for opportunities here if they want to return. We want them to have the opportunities we did not have.  He is a mature individual, possessing human values to conduct himself successfully in society. Prepared for the future and with the capacity to make proper decisions.

Advice you have for us in order to make the best learning environment happen.

I recommend more integration in content areas with the most capable teachers are. I recommend we have true teachers and superb counselors. A Hispanic district level representative to take suggestions, answer questions and solve problems. Encourage Hispanic parents participation, to listen to them and to the students. Call for family meetings so voices can be heard,  more funds and prepared teachers to support ESL students.I recommend more cultural sensitivity courses for teachers to help stop racism at all levels. I would recommend more cooperation. I would recommend that the district work closer with parents and students to create more classes and activities to support ESL teachers and students. Monthly meetings to assure that the actions are carried away. I would also recommend that there should be an advocate and ombudsman available to parents and students. Provide more funds to support for education and less for war to be able to prepare students with high level information seeking skills. Think of ways to provide information in Spanish to make it accessible.

Spanish Responses:

Describe the learning environment that you don’t want in the high school

I don’t want to see in the new high school a teacher who does not understand the struggles of an ESL student. I want more consideration and support from these teachers, more cultural sensitivity courses, no racism, no negligence towards ESL students.

No divisions by race, socioeconomics, geography, no inequality of resources.

No quiero ver racismo a ningun nivel.

Describe the learning environment that you would like to see in the high school:

Harmony, integration, no students held back because ESL, After school ESL workshops, greater emphasis on language, global history and culture, more Hispanic teachers or at least proportional representation, second language taught in elementary. Cultural relevance from cultures oiutside of Alaskan cultures.

Describe a student when he/she graduates:

Great writing skills, good oral communication, appropriate & advanced internet search skills, open minded, non-judgemental, advanced library information seeking skills, critical thinking.
