ACT and SAT are college entrance exams. Many colleges require students to take and earn a certain score in order to gain admittance to their schools. In some states, the ACT is now required for all juniors. In Alaska, it remains an optional test. As a result, Alaska scores may tend to be higher on average than in states where all students, college bound and not, are required to take the test. In 2005-2006, 44 students took the ACT and 188 students took the SAT.
