A great deal of confusion exists between graduation and dropout rates. Here are some facts and figures that will hopefully provide clarification.

Graduation Rate:

Graduation rate is determined by the number of students who graduate “on time,” with their class, after four years of high school. Students who graduate but take longer than four years are NOT  included in this statistic.

  All Students Alaska
Native
Caucasian Asian/Pacific Islander Free/Reduced Lunch (Poverty)
2004-2005 63% 37.5% 70.1% 76.8% 51.7%
2005-2006 65.8% 48.4% 70% 80.4% 46.2%

Dropout Rate:

Dropout rate refers to students in grades 7-12 who either quit school in the middle of the year or who do not return to school in the fall (no shows), and their records are not requested by another school. This indicates that they are no longer attending school.

  All Students Alaska
Native
Caucasian Asian/Pacific Islander Free/Reduced
Lunch (Poverty)
2004-2005 4.8% 8.6% 4.1% 1.4% 6.6%
2005-2006 4.8% 8.7% 3.3% 1% 11.1%

A common assumption is that most dropouts are failing classes and lack basic skills. Actually, a significant number of dropouts have passing grades and are proficient in academic skills.
