High School Qualifying Exam

The state of Alaska requires that all students pass a high school qualifying exam in order to graduate from high school. Students take this test for the first time as sophomores, and if they do not score proficient or advanced, they are given the opportunity to retake the exam during their junior and senior years. For the 2004-2005 school year, the following number of students scored proficient/advanced—in other words, they “passed”--on the test:

2004-2005 Juneau 2004-2005 State of Alaska
72% proficient/advanced in reading 69%
84% proficient/advanced in writing 84%
76% proficient/advanced in math 72%

Important to note also is the number of students who scored proficient/advanced on the retests during their junior and senior years:

31% proficient/advanced in reading 27%
42% proficient/advanced in writing 44%
35% proficient/advanced in math 44%

31% proficient/advanced in writing 39%
52% proficient/advanced in math 50%
