The Next Generation:  Our Kids, Our Community

Welcome to the Website for The Next Generation:  Our Kids, Our Community, the project for developing the educational plan for high schools in Juneau, Alaska.

Here you will find the latest information on the project, process, people involved, and schedule of events.  We ask that you pay special attention to the scheduled forums in January and February and encourage you to attend one of them in order to share your thoughts on the future of high school education in Juneau.

An Advisory Committee, representing many facets of the overall Juneau community, was created to help guide this process and make recommendations to the school board. With the assistance of the general community, the Advisory Committee, district staff and students, our goal is to develop an educational plan that is dedicated to high expectations and success for all students.  Our hope is that this plan will represent a spirit of cooperation and accomplishment of which we can all be proud.

It has taken many years, and numerous campaigns and votes, to reach the point where we are today.  The new school, Thunder Mountain High School, is under construction and will open for the 2008-2009 school year.  This is an exciting and unique opportunity to rethink high school education for the students in Juneau.

During the coming months, the Advisory Committee will be studying exemplary high school programs that encompass best practices.  Information on these programs will also be shared on this website.  We encourage you to talk to committee members and attend the forums scheduled in March that will highlight several of these programs that the committee feels are the best “fit” for Juneau, based on input from the community.

As Superintendent Peggy Cowan said, “ I believe that this is one of the most important tasks that we face in order to truly improve education and meet the needs of our students in the years to come.” The development of an educational plan will be a considerable undertaking and will require a constructive, thoughtful, and results oriented process to ensure the future success of improving high school education in Juneau.  We welcome your involvement and participation in this critically important endeavor.
